Organic waste such as kitchen waste, grass clipping, fruit waste and weeds contains large amounts of nutrients and energy. This energy can be harvested using anaerobic digestion process, and is applicable to small coffee and fruit plantations on Hawaii Island.

NELHA has been monitoring its equipment using a variety of disparate systems. Over the past year or so, it has been upgrading to a comprehensive data acquisition system. It is now possible to get real-time data on pumping stations and their power usage, which will allow them to improve pumping efficiencies and reduce operational costs.
