Anchialine pools are ecosystems unique to Hawaii within the United States. Ms. Sedar will describe what they are and why they are important. She will then discuss the restoration work that is necessary to bring back healthy anchialine pool ecosystems within Kekaha Kai State Park, which entails removing guppies, sediment, and non-native vegetation from the pools. Besides photos, she will show some ōpae ‘ula, the endemic species that is most commonly seen in anchialine pools.

Dena Sedar is the Hawai‘i Island Interpretive Specialist for Hawai‘i State Parks. She is currently undertaking the restoration of three anchialine pools within Kekaha Kai State Park. The anchialine pool restoration project is motivated by Dena’s love of ‘ōpae ‘ula.

After the presentation, we will have pupus, drinks, and conversation. We are informal and it is potluck, so please bring a pupu and non-alcoholic beverage to share. Reusable plates and cups are encouraged, as is taking home your own trash.
