Photos of forests on Hawaii Island

When: Mon. July 24, 2017, 5 p.m.
Where: NELHA Gateway Center
Presenter: Dr. J.B. Friday, UH Manoa Komohana Research and Extension Center

Some small landowners are planting high-value hardwoods like mahogany and koa for eventual use as cabinet or furniture woods. Others are managing native forests purely for conservation. Dr. Friday will describe some of these projects and provide an update on Rapid `Ohia Death, a fungal disease that is killing `ohia trees around Hawaii island.

J.B. Friday is the extension forester with the University of Hawaii's Cooperative Extension Service in Hilo. He has a Ph.D. in Agronomy and Soil Science from the University of Hawaii, and a master's degree from the Yale University School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. His research interests include the impacts of invasive tree species on native forests and the economics of the forest industry in Hawaii.

After the presentation, we will have pupus, drinks, and conversation. We are informal and it is potluck, so please bring a pupu and non-alcoholic beverage to share. Reusable plates and cups are encouraged, as is taking home your own trash.
